Cognigen Poster at American Pain Society Meeting

The work of Cognigen scientists Joel Owen, PhD, RPh*, and Inger Darling, PhD, was presented in a poster at the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society from May 6 to 9, 2010, in Baltimore. The poster, Single-Dose and Steady-State Pharmacokinetics of MoxDuo™, a Dual-Opioid Formulation Containing a Fixed-Ratio of Morphine and Oxycodone, was presented by QRxPharma and Lifetree Clinical Research.

This noncompartmental analysis found that in the dual-opioid combination MoxDuo, morphine and oxycodone exhibit pharmacokinetic properties that are linear and dose proportional over a dosage range of 3 mg/2 mg to 12 mg/8 mg (morphine/oxycodone). The study also determined that pharmacokinetic parameters for oxycodone, morphine, and morphine metabolites following administration of MoxDuo were consistent with results obtained for the individual drugs in previously published studies.

MoxDuo (QRxPharma, Bedminster, NJ) is a fixed-ratio, dual-opioid capsule (3:2 morphine:oxycodone). The American Pain Society is a national chapter of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Founded in 1973, IASP is the largest multidisciplinary international association in the field of pain, bringing together scientists, clinicians, health care providers, and policy makers to stimulate and support the study of pain and to translate that knowledge into improved pain relief worldwide. Currently IASP has more than 6500 individual members from over 100 countries.

*Dr. Owen is now associate professor of pharmaceutics at Union University School of Pharmacy in Jackson, Tennessee.
